Made of soapstone found in western Kenya, the Gusii and Abigusii ethnic groups individually hand carve each of these one of a kind pieces. They first mine the soapstone from the hills around the village of Tabaka and then, using knives or handmade tools, the craftsman individually carve each piece. After the carving the figure is wet sanded and then polished, all by hand. To form the colors they dye the stone and then incise it with the patterns the individual artist desires. Adorn your home with one of these traditional, one of a kind pieces of artwork and display the ingenuity and talent of these traditional African artisans. Made in Kenya 2African Fabrics Our African fabric has been imported from the western regions of Africa
including Senegal, The Ivory Coast, Niger and Benin. The colors are intense and
vibrant. Some have gold metallic paint, others resemble mud cloth and a few are
copies of Kente cloth. 3.Woodcarvings Woodcarvings is a major informal industry in Africa, especially in kenya, one which provides a livelihood for many people. Due to Africa's struggling economies and the fact that many carvers, live in semi arid regions, dependacy on crop production is a near impossibility. Woodcarvers in Kenya have traditionally used specific tree species in their work. These include Muhugu (Mahagony or Branchylaena huillensis), Mpingo (African Ebony or Dalbergia melanoxylon), Olive (Olea africana), and Rosewood (Combretum schumannii or Spirostachys africana). As the industry has grown and the demand for these woods has increased, carvers have become one of the many forest users contributing to the severe taxation on African forests, and on these specific tree species. As a result many carvers are working to change the type of woods they carve. They are moving from using the traditional slow growth hardwoods, to utilizing faster growing woods, termed "Good Woods" This website contains both the traditional hardwoods and the Goodwoods recently introduced. 4 Leather Items 5.
